WHAT IS A DENTAL EMERGENCY

Dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly. They include broken teeth/lost fillings, knocked out teeth, severe tooth pain, and swelling, and range from mild discomfort to severe trauma. Knowing what constitutes an emergency dental situation can help you to take immediate action and receive the appropriate care when necessary. Here are some situations that could indicate a dental crisis:

  • SEVERE TOOTHACHE AND DENTAL PAIN

Intense or persistent tooth pain may be an indication of dental trauma, tooth decay, or infection. It is important to seek immediate dental attention if the pain persists and is severe.

  • KNOCKED OUT (AVULSED TOOTH)

In the event that a tooth is completely knocked out of its socket as a result of trauma or injury it's important to seek emergency dental treatment as soon as you can. Rapid action can increase the chance of successfully reattaching a tooth, preserving its appearance and function.

  • A CHIPPED, CRACKED, OR FRACTURED TOOTH

Damages to the tooth structure can cause pain and sensitivity. If there is significant damage to the tooth, such as a cracked tooth or an exposed nerve, it's important to seek immediate dental care. This will prevent further complications, and restore its strength and functionality.

  • LOSS OF DENTAL CROWN OR FILLING

When a crown or filling falls out or becomes loose, it is important to replace it immediately to prevent damage to the tooth and discomfort. The tooth can be exposed to further decay and damage without the protective crown or filling.

  • ABSCESS OR DENTAL INFECTION

If left untreated, dental infections such as abscesses, gum disease or a toothache can cause severe swelling and pain. They may also have systemic effects. You may need to see a dentist immediately if you have symptoms like swelling, fever, or an unpleasant taste or smell in your mouth.

  • THE TRAUMA OF THE JAW OR MOUTH

Accidents, falls or sports injuries can cause fractures or dislocations to the jaw, teeth, or mouth. A dentist should evaluate any trauma to the mouth or face that causes severe pain, bleeding, or difficulty speaking or chewing.

  • SOFT-TISSUE INJURIES

Cuts or lacerations to the lips, cheeks, or tongue can occur due to trauma or accident biting. These injuries do not always need emergency dental treatment, but any significant bleeding or deep cuts that interfere with eating, speaking, or oral hygiene must be treated immediately.

  • Manage Pain: Take pain relievers as prescribed if you are experiencing dental discomfort. Aspirin should not be placed directly on your gums as it can cause irritation.
  • Handle Tooth Fragments Carefully: When you have chipped, cracked, or knocked out your tooth, treat the fragments carefully and do not touch the root. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub or remove any tissue fragments.
  • Protect Your Tooth: Try to put the tooth back into its socket if you can. If you cannot, keep the tooth moist in a container with milk or saline until you see a dental professional.
  • Stop bleeding: Apply gentle pressure to a cut, or an injury in the mouth with a gauze or a cloth. If bleeding is persistent or severe, you should seek immediate medical attention.

MEET DR. CHO - BRADDOCK FAMILY DENTAL

When patients are happy, I’m happy. When a person appreciates what my team and I have done, it’s a beautiful moment!

Some people come in with low self-esteem, because they are missing a front tooth or two. That has left them feeling ashamed and as a result they don’t smile and possibly haven’t smiled for a very long time. Restoring those missing teeth, with natural-looking materials, can instill new confidence and boost their self-esteem. They walk out with a smile that’s brimming with joy!

Dentistry, to me, is about helping people change their lives. Whether that’s restoring function, removing pain, or making a smile more attractive, I want each patient to leave the office looking and feeling better than when they arrived.
