WHAT IS A DENTAL EMERGENCY

Dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly. They include broken teeth/lost fillings, knocked out teeth, severe tooth pain, and swelling, and range from mild discomfort to severe trauma. Knowing what constitutes an emergency dental situation can help you to take immediate action and receive the appropriate care when necessary. Here are some situations that could indicate a dental crisis:

  • SEVERE TOOTHACHE AND DENTAL PAIN

    What it is:

Intense, persistent tooth pain may signal deep decay, dental trauma, or an infection that could affect the nerve of the tooth.

    Why it’s serious:

Left untreated, an infection can spread and cause systemic health complications.

    Our approach:

    • Comprehensive exam with digital X‑rays to identify decay, cracks, or abscesses
    • Root canal therapy when the infection has reached the nerve
    • Tooth extraction if the tooth cannot be saved
    • Pain management and antibiotic therapy (as needed) to reduce inflammation and discomfort

We prioritize relieving pain quickly while addressing the underlying cause to prevent recurrence.

  • KNOCKED OUT TOOTH

    What it is:

A tooth that has been completely displaced from its socket due to trauma, sports injuries, or accidents.

    What to do:

Immediate action matters. If treated within an hour, the chance of successful reattachment is much higher.

    What to do before arrival:

    • Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root
    • Rinse gently if dirty — do not scrub
    • Try to reposition it in the socket
    • If that’s not possible, keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva

    In‑office care:

    • Reimplantation and splinting to stabilize the tooth
    • Follow‑up care to monitor healing
    • Antibiotics & mouth rinse to prevent infection

Prompt treatment can preserve not just appearance, but also proper chewing and speech function.

  • A CHIPPED, CRACKED, OR FRACTURED TOOTH

    What it is:

Damage to the tooth structure ranging from minor chips to deep cracks that may expose the nerve.

    Signs you need urgent care:

    • Sharp pain when biting
    • Sensitivity to hot or cold
    • Visible crack or missing piece

    Treatment options:

    • Dental bonding for minor chips
    • Porcelain crown for larger fractures
    • Root canal if the nerve is compromised
    • Extraction and replacement for irreparable damage

Restoring strength and function prevents worsening pain and future structural failure.

  • LOSS OF DENTAL CROWN OR FILLING

    Why it’s urgent:

Crowns and fillings protect the tooth from decay and extreme sensitivity. Without them, the underlying tooth is vulnerable to damage.

    What we do:

    • Re‑cement the original crown when possible
    • Create a new crown or filling if needed
    • Temporary protection to reduce sensitivity while you wait

Prompt care prevents bacteria from entering and causing deeper issues.

  • ABSCESS OR DENTAL INFECTION

    What it is:

A pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection — often painful, swollen, and sometimes accompanied by fever.

    Why it’s serious:

Untreated infections can spread to the jaw, neck, or bloodstream.

    Emergency care includes:

    • Incision and drainage (if needed)
    • Root canal therapy or extraction
    • Antibiotic therapy
    • Pain relief and supportive care

We treat the infection and the source to prevent recurrence.

  • THE TRAUMA OF THE JAW OR MOUTH

    Common causes:

Falls, sports injuries, car accidents or forceful impact.

    Symptoms that need immediate attention:

    • Severe pain
    • Bleeding that doesn’t stop
    • Difficulty speaking or chewing
    • Loose or broken teeth

    Treatment may include:

    • Stabilization of broken teeth
    • Referral for facial fractures
    • Soft‑tissue repair (gums, lips, tongue)
    • Protective mouth guards post‑recovery

We assess all injuries to protect your oral health and facial function.

  • SOFT-TISSUE INJURIES

Cuts to the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue may bleed heavily and require urgent care.

    What we do:

    • Clean and disinfect the wound
    • Stitches if needed
    • Provide an antibiotic rinse or medication
    • Advice on home care to promote healing

If you’re unsure whether something qualifies as an emergency, call our Fairfax office — we’ll guide you and schedule urgent treatment if needed.

Braddock Family Dental - Dr. Cho

MEET DR. CHO - BRADDOCK FAMILY DENTAL

When patients are happy, I’m happy. When a person appreciates what my team and I have done, it’s a beautiful moment!

Some people come in with low self-esteem, because they are missing a front tooth or two. That has left them feeling ashamed and as a result they don’t smile and possibly haven’t smiled for a very long time. Restoring those missing teeth, with natural-looking materials, can instill new confidence and boost their self-esteem. They walk out with a smile that’s brimming with joy!

Dentistry, to me, is about helping people change their lives. Whether that’s restoring function, removing pain, or making a smile more attractive, I want each patient to leave the office looking and feeling better than when they arrived.
